MORE than 300 people are expected to attend a conference aimed at showcasing and promoting the region’s growing Fintech (financial technology) sector.

Organised by FinTech North with support from regional IT network Dynamo, the free, all-day conference will be hosted at Sage’s head office in Newcastle tomorrow (Wednesday, September 25).

FinTech North is the event-based community for the North of England, and the conference will be chaired by Chris Sier, HM Treasury FinTech Envoy and Chairman of FinTech North.

The event will feature speakers from organisations including Sage, Innovate Finance, Atom Bank, Dynamo, Paid, Honcho, TSB, Equiniti, Thoughtworks, Newcastle University, Track My Risks and Whitecap Consulting.

Mark Mullen, CEO of Atom Bank, will talk about the opportunities for growing a major FinTech in the region during a morning session covering Digital Innovation and Open Banking, which will also feature Jason Wilkinson-Brown the Head of Digital Propositions and Partnerships for TSB.

Later, a range of experts will explore what the Fintech challenges are, where the region is excelling and where the community can best focus efforts.

Finally, speakers will be invited to showcase their Fintech innovations and tell their stories of growth in the North-East. Delegates will hear from growing established businesses and exciting new startups in a quickfire format as well as a panel on the topic of funding.

The Director of the Northern Powerhouse Partnership, Henri Murison will close the day with a keynote speech.

“We are delighted to be hosting our first full North East conference in partnership with Sage. The UK Fintech sector is evolving at an exciting pace and there is considerable opportunity for the North East region to play an important role,” said Chris Sier.

“As with all of FinTech North’s conferences, this event will represent an open and collaborative platform for sharing ideas, challenges and best practice, for showcasing innovative start-ups and scale-ups and for facilitating the connections and collaborations which create real value for businesses and consumers,” he added.

Sabby Gill, MD for Sage UK & Ireland, who are also sponsoring the event, said: “We are proud to support and host the Fintech North community, providing the opportunity to come together and share a vision for the markets we serve. Sage was once a start-up born in the North East so the region is very special to us and to be able to support growing start-ups, in particular, is a privilege. We look forward to sharing knowledge and learning from our industry peers.”

Dawn Dunn, Dynamo’s Fintech Cluster Manager, said: “We’re really looking forward to the conference and have supported FinTech North with our local knowledge and extensive contacts in the Fintech sector, and the wider regional IT industry. There are some exciting opportunities for individual firms, but it’s also important that companies collaborate together to promote the whole sector regionally.”

Founded in 2016, FinTech North is a not-for-profit event-based initiative, which has become the focal point for the Fintech community in the Northern Powerhouse. In April 2019 FinTech North co-founded the FinTech National Network, alongside Innovate Finance and FinTech Scotland, with FinTech Wales, FinTech Northern Ireland and FinTech West all joining in July.

Dynamo has more than 150 members made up of IT organisations and employers, technology hubs, universities, colleges and local government. It works to grow the region’s IT economy through promoting the region as a hub for the enterprise IT sector and has a mission to increase collaboration, innovation, skills and ‘noise’ to grow the region’s IT economy.
